With great pride, Taylor McCaffrey announces our colleague and friend, Charles Huband, was appointed to the Order of Manitoba. We are sad to announce that he will be posthumously honoured at a ceremony on Thursday, July 20, at the Legislative Building.
The Order of Manitoba is the province’s highest honour, established in 1999 to honour Manitobans who have demonstrated excellence and achievement and have dedicated themselves to enriching the social, cultural and economic well-being of the province and those who live here.
Charles was admitted to the Manitoba Bar in 1956, joining the Firm of Richardson and Company, the predecessor to what is now Taylor McCaffrey in the mid-1960s. He served as a Judge on the Manitoba Court of Appeal, and in 1996 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Manitoba Bar Association. Following his term on the Manitoba Court of Appeal, Charles returned to the firm for another nine years. After leaving the firm in 2018, Charles continued as a sole practitioner until his 90th birthday.
Charles Huband was appointed to the Order of Manitoba for lending his time to important causes in the community for over 60 years and being an accomplished lawyer, lecturer, judge, political leader and community activist. Over 50 years ago, Charles shared in the ideals of others that theatre is important to the health and growth of communities. This passion resulted in Charles assisting in the creation of the Manitoba Theatre Workshop which eventually became the Prairie Theatre Exchange. He was also the co-founder of the Westminster Housing Society, an organization committed to providing good quality housing to lower-income tenants.
We’d like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Charles’s family as they accept this award on Charles’s behalf. It is well deserved. He will be missed and Taylor McCaffrey is proud to call Charles a friend and alumnus.
