Role Overview:

We are currently seeking a full-time Legal Assistant to provide general legal assistance to the lawyers and other support staff in the Labour and Employment practice group.

Applicants are required to demonstrate integrity through a strong work ethic, personal accountability, professional image and ethical behavior.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drafting correspondence to clients and counsel.
  • Drafting pleadings and legal documents.
  • Preparing files for hearings and arbitrations.
  • Coordinating service and filing for proceedings with various tribunals/forums and courts.
  • Dictation- prepare letters, e-mails and court documents.
  • File management including intake with clients, performing conflict searches, file and client support, opening and closing file processes.
  • Billings- preparing draft bills for review, making necessary corrections, corresponding with clients and assistance with AR collection.
  • Monitoring and responding to cold calls.
  • Organizing files and documents electronically and maintaining them in electronic database.
  • Making necessary bookings, and updating lawyers’ calendars.
  • Providing additional administrative assistance and general office duties as assigned.

  • Ability to interact effectively with internal firm members and clients.
  • Ability to work independently and also work effectively as part of a team.
  • Capacity to handle a demanding workload and respond appropriately to changing priorities as needs arise.
  • Ability to act with discretion when handling confidential information.
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast paced environment and implement projects in a timely manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to effectively and tactfully communicate with individuals within the firm and clients external to the firm.

Qualifications:

  • 2 years’ experience is considered an asset, but we welcome applications from post-secondary legal graduates with administrative experience who seek to learn and develop their skills and experience, then advance in the firm.
  • Post-secondary education in Legal Administration.
  • Experience in the use of MS Office Applications.
  • Experience in a similar role is an asset.

Schedule:

  • 35 hour work week, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
