Taylor McCaffrey is proud to announce that our colleague and friend, Grant Mitchell, K.C., has received the Manitoba Bar Association’s 2023 Distinguished Service Award.
The Distinguished Service Award is an extremely high honour presented annually to an individual who has contributed significantly both to Manitoba’s legal profession and the broader community. Grant’s contributions truly have been exceptional.
Grant was admitted to the Manitoba Bar in 1978, joining Taylor McCaffrey in 1979 and he retired after 37 years with the firm at the end of 2016. Grant focused his career on two areas: labour and employment law, and human rights law. He is considered one of the leading practitioners in both fields in Manitoba. He represented many of the largest and most significant employers in the province, including universities, municipalities, manufacturers, construction companies, retail companies and service organizations.
Grant is widely respected for his expertise, his generosity of spirit and his willingness to help others. He has written and published extensively, taught the Labour Management Relations course at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Law for 22 years and Intro to Trial Advocacy for 10 years. He served as President of the Law Society of Manitoba. He has been instrumental in the success of numerous professional associations such as The Employment Law Alliance and the Canadian Association of University Solicitors, and volunteered in multiple capacities, including for Athletics Canada, Athletics Manitoba, the United Way of Winnipeg, the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties. Grant has always been a leader and inspiration in our community.
