Taylor McCaffrey LLP is very proud to announce that Patricia C. Lane has been appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) by the lieutenant-governor in council, based on recommendations made by the minister following consultation with an advisory council.
This prestigious title recognizes exceptional merit and contribution to the legal profession. Appointees must demonstrate professional integrity, good character and excellence in the practice of law, and be acknowledged by their peers as leading counsel or exceptionally gifted practitioners. They also must have demonstrated exceptional qualities of leadership in the profession, including in the conduct of the affairs of the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of Manitoba and other legal organizations, and/or have done outstanding work in the fields of legal education or legal scholarship.
Patricia’s contributions to the legal profession, our community and our firm are numerous and significant. She started her career as a civil litigator, but soon began to practice family law on an almost exclusive basis. Her collaborative law skills and abilities have made a positive impact on the practice of family law in both Winnipeg and Manitoba at large. Lane has been a positive role model and mentor for women lawyers, both inside Taylor McCaffrey LLP as well as through her involvement in the Women Lawyers Forum. Lane has also shared her time and skills with the students and members of the Manitoba Bar in various capacities, including as a teacher, a presenter and by organizing educational opportunities.

Q.C. appointments have not been awarded in Manitoba since 2001, when the practice was ended in the province. Bill 22, The Queen’s Counsel Act, passed last year, restored Q.C. appointments with a new and transparent eligibility criteria for lawyers in Manitoba.
A formal ceremony in honour of this year’s Q.C. recipients will be held in the fall.
Please join us in congratulating Patricia on this well-deserved appointment.
