Alain was born in Steinbach, Manitoba on September 5, 1966. He attended the Université de Saint-Boniface and the University of Manitoba (BA, 1987 Medal of the Governor General of Canada) and the Faculté de droit, Université de Moncton (LL.B., 1990 Gold Medal). He is fluently bilingual, in French and English.
He was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1991 and since then has practiced law with Taylor McCaffrey LLP, first as an Associate and then from 1998 to present as a Partner of one of the largest law firms in the Prairie Region of Canada. He is a member of their Real Estate, Corporate and Commercial, Financial Advisory Services, Wills and Estates practice groups. He is experienced in all facets of real estate law, with a particular interest in life lease, condominium and land development. He set up three satellite rural offices for the firm and continues to manage two of them. He is the Chair of the Planning Committee and the co-Chair of the Annual General Meeting Committee of the firm.
He serves as legal advisor and corporate counsel to local, national and international clients. He routinely acts as lead legal counsel on major files. The World Trade Centre Winnipeg has referred clients to him and they consult with him on various legal matters, including Canadians doing business in the USA.
Alain was a member of the Manitoba Bar Association (MBA) Real Property Section Committee reviewing life leases in 1998-99 and was a presenter on the topic at a subsequent continuing education program of the Law Society of Manitoba (Advising Older Clients about Real Estate and Other Housing Arrangements; Selected Topics, including Life Leases. June 2000) and at the Isaac Pitblado Lectures (November 2015). He was also a regular sessional lecturer at the Université de Saint-Boniface (business admin. courses) and at Robson Hall, Faculty of Law (business organization law, en français). He has also been a presenter of continuing education programs on real estate, professional legal conduct and linguistic rights. In 2014, he was a member of his firm’s legal team that was awarded the MBA Pro Bono Legal Award of the Year for a legal challenge of a Manitoba Municipal By-Law deemed to be discriminatory against persons with disabilities.
Currently, Alain is an active member of: MBA and Canadian Bar Associations; L’Association des juristes d’expression française du Manitoba inc. (Past President); La Chambre de commerce de Saint-Boniface (Past President); The Manitoba Club; The Order of St. John (Commander); The Knights of Columbus (4th Degree); Canadian Corps of Commissionaires (Manitoba, Governor); Canadian Forces Liaison Council (Manitoba Board). He is the Honorary Legal Counsel to the Royal Military Institute of Manitoba.
Alain is especially proud of his continued involvement over many years with: (a) St. John Ambulance. Past Chair of Manitoba Council and of the Regional Board with North West Territories and Nunavut, past National Honorary Legal Counsel. In June 2018, he was appointed as the Deputy Chancellor of The Priory of Canada of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, and; (b) Canadian Armed Forces. Honorary Col of 16/17 Field Ambulance, Reserves.
In 2010, Alain and his daughter Martine received Life Saving Awards from the RCMP and The Order of St. John for trying to save the life of the driver of a motor vehicle.
On his personal time, Alain enjoys hiking, curling, and handy man jobs around the house, cottage and his hunting cabin.
He is married to Dr. Francine Laurencelle, Professor at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba, and together they have three children Colin, Martine and Rémi.
