For the first time in history, the Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justice Richard Wagner and the court’s justices are here in Winnipeg this past week to hear two appeals. Winnipeg is the first city to welcome the Supreme Court outside of Ottawa.
The Supreme Court has long broadcast its hearings online, but this has been a great opportunity for Manitobans to see a Supreme Court hearing live and learn about the justice system. It also has been an opportunity for the justices of the Supreme Court to meet Manitobans and learn more about our province. All nine judges also met with various groups including indigenous communities, the francophone community, the legal community, and students throughout this week. A statement from the high court says the decision to travel to Winnipeg for the week is part of the court’s ongoing commitment to increasing access to justice for all Canadians.
The Manitoba Court of Appeal and the National Judicial Institute will be hosting a dinner exclusively for the legal profession in which Taylor McCaffrey LLP is pleased to join. The dinner will be held at RBC Convention Centre and the legal community, court judges from across the country and representatives of the local judicial are expected to attend the event.
